Tigercity formed in Northampton, MA, in the fall of 2004 by Bill Gillim (Vocals, Guitar) and Joel Ford (Bass, Keys, Vocals). In the Summer of 2005 they picked up and moved to Brooklyn, and after a few months – with the help of friend/producer Al Carlson (Brazilian Girls) – the band had themselves a DIY bedroom EP, one that merited their inclusion on the VICE MagazineVol. 1 CD/DVD sampler.
Yet it wasn’t until the early 2006 induction of guitarist Andrew Brady and drummer Aynsley Powell that Tigercity began to truly hit their stride. The additions allowed Tigercity to reach its potential, fleshing out the sound and providing added input in the songwriting process, effectively upping the creative anti. At shows around New York city they began making a name for themselves with their tight live sets, catching the attention of Rolling Stone, which featured Tigercity as a band “On The Edge” in their “Breaking” section.
Their highly danceable pop is a blend of The Cars, Roxy Music, and modern indie rock. A recent SPIN.com band of the day, in the last year Tigercity have appeared on PRI’s “Fair Game”, been featured in ‘Sup Magazine, recorded a session with prominent indie website Daytrotter.com and received love from multiple blogs ranging from Disco Nap to Music For Robots. In 2007 they also self-released their Pretend Not To Love EP, which was recognized as an iTunes “Indie Spotlight”. They were also recently selected as one of the bands for Volume One of the Shout It Out Loud Music compilation. Distributed in partnership with HARP magazine, the carefully curated compilation features a wide array of promising new artists such as Cut Off Your Hands and Georgie James, as well as established acts like MSTRKFT and Rhett Miller.
All of these accomplishments have come without label support, and serve to exemplify the bands work ethic and drive to create their own opportunities rather than sit idle and wait for them to arise. Tigercity have been steadily making a name for themselves in NYC and around the country. They’ve been touring heavily for the past two years, and have shared the stage with acts including but not limited to M.I.A., Junior Boys, The Rosebuds, Jamie Lidel, VHS or Beta, and David Cross.
Most recently Tigercity have minted a deal overseas in the UK, Europe, and Japan, signing to Ben Watt’s Buzzin’ Fly Records (www.buzzinfly.com). Check them out at myspace.com/tigercity.
